Tendonitis

Tendonitis

Tendonitis is a common disorder in which specific tendons are inflamed or swell, causing pain and soreness. Tendons are rope-like tissues that attach muscle to bone. As people age, repetitive motion can injure a tendon where it attaches to the bone, causing inflammation. This often happens in the hand or wrist. Some common forms of tendinitis are named after the sports that increase their risk such as tennis or golfer’s elbow, swimmer’s shoulder, etc.

Tendonitis is different from arthritis, which is inflammation of a joint. Tendonitis usually can be attributed to overuse of a certain area, but can also occur where calcium deposits have developed.

Tendonitis Treatment

The initial treatment for tendonitis is to reduce pain and swelling. This includes rest, anti-inflammatory medications, stretching exercises. Other treatments include ultrasound, physical therapy and steroid injections. Surgery is recommended when these measures don’t relieve the pain. It’s performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting.
